I met Sahar two years ago, chatted about her zero-waste journey and my views on fashion over smoothie bowls, started using everything Bare Necessities toothbrush, soap, scrubs, cutlery a year and half ago, and shot these images one year ago. What is zero-waste according to you? The simple answer: aim to reduce what we trash in landfills and incinerators to zero — and to rebuild our local economies in support of community health, sustainability, and justice.

We reduce what we need, reuse as much as we can, send little to be recycled, and compost what we cannot. The less simple answer: It's really about redefining the system.

We currently live in a linear economy where we take resources from the earth and then dump them in a giant hole in the ground. The goal of zero waste is to move to a circular economy where we write trash out of existence.

The circular economy mimics nature in that there is no trash in nature. Zero Waste is lifestyle that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary. How did you make the shift? My first few steps included carrying reusable cutlery, bottles etc. The transition was incremental, for instance when I ran out of soap instead of buying store bought ones, I would experiment and eventually learned how to make my own. I also put all my waste in a bag instead of throwing it and analysed my sources of trash at the end of the day, week and month.

I noticed a lot of my waste was food packaging and personal care products packaging. By shopping at buffalo back collective for my organic groceries and making my own personal care products I was able to significantly reduce my waste.

It took me months to create dramatic changes in my lifestyle. Sustain condoms all the way from America is a good option though! While they are compostable, they are still packaged in a little bit of plastic. What do you think? I am not still not completely zero waste — and I doubt I ever will be.

It is good to know your boundaries. We are in the largest global garbage crisis of our lifetime. Every toothbrush, shampoo bottle you have used in your lifetime, currently exists on the planet somewhere and will probably outlive your grand grandchild! Starting with small actions, like carrying your cloth bags to the grocery store, refusing the single use plastic straw whatever you can, helps make a difference!

What inspired Bare? A little sneak peek maybe: what are the next steps for Bare? In response to this problem, I wanted to create a company that mirrored the values of zero-waste, ethical consumption and sustainability. So Bare Necessities was born. In the larger sense, BN seeks to change the narrative on waste in India. In the future, Bare Necessities seeks to becomes an interdisciplinary hub, a home for product designers to design products with a cradle to cradle philosophy, a place for policy analysts to work with local government on policy recommendations to manage our waste better, to reduce our waste.

A place for behaviour economics, ecologists, researchers and consumers alike to build the ecosystem towards a circular economy. At Bare we spend a significant amount of our resources on educating and empowering people, communities and businesses about the impact of their choices on the environment. From coconut vendors to local coffee shops. We work with people of all age groups, socio economic backgrounds to collectively create a zero-waste movement in India.

Being raised by a single mum, I wanted to create an enterprise that empowers women — I am very proud to say, we are a completely women run enterprise! We employ local women to make zero-waste products that care for you as much as they do for the planet.

A day in the life of Sahar. My mornings are sacred. I try not using my cell phone from 6 am to 10 am. I wake up at 6 am, run in Cubbon park twice a week, functional fitness thrice a week that has lots of Japanese Jiu Jitsu influence, football every day Saturday with a badass all women's crew.

I come back home cook myself a healthy breakfast the only meal I cook while listening to my favourite podcast How I Build This , shower, meditate and then start my work day! What are your thoughts on fashion's place in the fight for sustainability? I am super passionate about ethical fashion.

Learning about the Rana Plaza Tragedy, the vast human rights violations and the environmental issues associated with the fashion industry was a huge trigger for me. My current style attempts to celebrate the beauty and richness of India! It is exciting to incorporate indigenous, locally woven, handcrafted fabrics to tailor make something that I love. Yes Masood Bhai, has been my tailor since I was a little girl. When I do shop, I only buy slow fashion, local Indian designers who are making ethical clothing.

Additionally, India being home such amazing textiles, amazing slow fashion designers, and an emerging conscious millennial population who want to align themselves to a certain cause by their consumption choices; the potential is enormous!
